Over the weekend the Colon Cancer Alliance hosted its National Conference in Phoenix, which attracts colon cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, family members, healthcare professionals and advocates from across the world who come together to discuss important issues and raise awareness of this disease.

The agenda included social gatherings, nutrition and exercise workshops, meditation sessions and presentations by global health and colon cancer experts. Participants had the opportunity to learn about the latest and rapidly changing advances in colon cancer prevention, treatment and survivorship.

Nearly 20 medical experts ranging from dietitians to psychiatrists to gastrointestinal oncologists gathered to present on topics and issues facing the colon cancer community today. These individuals provided keen insight on the physical and emotional impacts of colon cancer, and the research currently being conducted to combat the disease.

Dr. Cynthia Thompson, PhD engaged with survivors and discussed ways to reduce their risk of cancer reduction through nutrition and lifestyle behaviors. Oncology social worker Sarah Kelly presented on coping with the high cost of cancer care. Other speakers participated in panel discussions where conference attendees inquired about new drug therapies, treatment options, and breakthrough research.

The conference was also featured on a local CBS news station!

CCA also named the winners of the Sapphire Awards, which honor three outstanding advocates in the colon cancer community who truly raise the bar by promoting activism and encouraging awareness of colon cancer on local and national levels.
