October Heroes of the Month: #BlankCancer Pioneer Heidi Burkhart with Will Lanier

Be Seen, Get Screened's Hero of the Month series highlights the work of inspiring individuals on the front line in the fight against colon cancer. In our latest Q&A, we talked to Heidi Burkhart, President of Saxon/Hart, a cause-driven marketing company, and Will Lanier, a personal trainer diagnosed with colon cancer at age 28.

Heidi's Saxon/Hart team started the #BlankCancer initiative, a campaign that has taken over Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram in order to raise awareness and generate funding to assist cancer patients across the country simply by "filling in the blank."

We had the opportunity to talk with both Heidi and Will about their #BlankCancer story.

Sheri Hodges' Son Battled Colon Cancer In His 20s. This Is His Story.

April 2013  - My youngest child David was attending college at the University of Alaska in Anchorage and working full time for Best Buy when he called to tell me that the pneumonia they had been treating him for “probably wasn’t pneumonia.” When I asked what they thought it might be (fearing tuberculosis) his voice cracked as he said “cancer.”

My heart dropped, my mind raced, and instantly I thought of many reasons why there was no way this could be true. From there proceeded many tests, emergency flights to Anchorage, the aid of a wonderful Oncology Advocate (her background is pathology) and then the diagnosis of Stage 4 Colorectal Cancer. It had metastasized to the liver and the lungs. From there “The Journey” began.

January 2013 – My father was diagnosed with Colorectal Cancer, they were able to remove the cancer via resection and he is doing well.

May 24th 2014 – the same day we held our son's Celebration of Life service, my Uncle Joe was diagnosed with stage IV colorectal cancer. He is still fighting it, but at the age of 77 it’s a tough battle.

Noninvasive, Stool DNA-Based Colon Cancer Screening Test Is Now Covered By Medicare

In a release issued earlier this month, the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued its final National Coverage Determination (NCD) for Cologuard®, making it the first and only Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved stool DNA test for the detection of colorectal cancer and precancer covered by Medicare.

Medicare coverage for Cologuard will go into effect immediately, and the hope is that this noninvasive colon cancer screening test will reach those 23 million Americans who have not yet undergone their life-saving screening.
